Chapter Thirty

It was a mistake to come here.

Lucious should’ve found someone else, something else to settle this ache of yearning in his soul. But there was no one else. Nobody except this meddlesome, stuck-up jarl. Who stood before him in all his regal beauty, his elegance unmatched by all the courtesans here.

“Drink?” Julian asked. He poured him some wine and then sat down leisurely.

Lucious shrugged off his fur coat, then sat down, legs spread, stance completely relaxed as he drained the wine, relishing the burn. He stared at the man in front of him. The silence stretched out, too long and unnatural. Julian shifted in his seat.

“What does my lord wish to discuss tonight?”

Lucious smirked, licking his lips. “A lesson in etiquette.”

“Oh?” Julian plucked at his slip. “Before we get to that…I wanted to thank you again for saving me. I appreciate what you did. Calyree’s been bothering me for a while. I’m sorry if I seemed ungrateful before.”

Lucious waved his hand. “No need. I’m sure you would’ve done the same.”

Julian stiffened, clenching his hands in his lap. “What makes you so sure?”

“It’s the right thing to do.” Lucious shrugged. “Moral principles are tested in many ways. You can observe a group of people beating an elder to death and conclude that it’s wrong. You can see the wrongness of it, but your reaction is a reflection of your moral sense or, in this case, your moral upbringing. In jarl society, beating those who can’t defend themselves is common. Many þrælar have been beaten for sport. I can see why you doubt yourself. Most jarls would.”

“I-I don’t know if I’d have…” Julian looked away. “I’m guilty of many things. Being a bystander is one of them.”

“That doesn’t mean you can’t change.”

“I can see why your men follow you,” he said quietly. “You’re a good leader. Anyway, thank you. What Calyree wanted…I don’t wish that on anyone regardless of what they are.”

“That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” Lucious said. “Be careful. I might think you actually like me.”

“Gods forbid.” Julian shuddered, feigning horror.

“Pour me some more wine.” Lucious held out his cup. “Then tell me about your previous life as a jarl noble. I wish to be entertained.”

Julian poured them both another cup. “There isn’t much to tell. I lived with my family—”

“In Dalvík. Near the eastern flat plains, right?”

“Right.” Julian cleared his throat. “Anyway, we were nobles, as you can tell. I have a half-brother and sister who live here. My sister’s husband died in the war. She has two children and works for the warlord Brutus.”

“And what brought you here? How did you come in the employment of Madame Zelina?”

“I started as a servant until I came of age. She made sure to keep me away from all this. When I turned eighteen, she promoted me to a courtesan status. I knew before I started working here that I’d have to be one sooner or later. There was only one previous male courtesan. He was killed by Þrælar soldiers one night.
